An overnight stay in Deal
Deal is a quiet seaside town less than 2 hours from London (by train) so whilst it’s ideally situated for a day-trip from the city, it’s also makes an easy and accessible one-night stay for when you feel like treating yourself just that little bit more. Alternatively, you could extend your trip to visit nearby seaside towns such as Whitstable and Margate too. Both of these are also accessible by train.
When visiting during off-peak season, it’s worth checking shops/restaurants closing times e.g. lots of shops were closed on Sundays when I visited in early March. We stayed at The Rose hotel - a beautiful boutique hotel and former townhouse pub.
A little bit more about The Rose…
Despite only having nine rooms to choose from, you still feel spoilt for choice as each room has a unique colour palette and varies in size and facilities - I immediately fell for the dusty pink and greens so opted to stay in Room 6 but in hindsight, I would have chosen one of the bigger rooms to enjoy one of their gorgeous bathtubs!
Breakfast is served in the hotel’s restaurant and is served as two parts from a set menu - sort of like a starter and main. Between us, we went for the brown butter pancake (SO good) and the granola pot.
Our room had vintage furniture, a vinyl player and Austin Austin bathroom products, a copy of Lodestars Anthology which I very much enjoyed. Some of the larger rooms have all of that plus a TV, bathtub etc. Access to tea, coffee and water is a shared facility in the corridor.
The hotel itself is cosy, charming and a fun source of inspiration for interior lovers. However, the service at the hotel didn’t fully match this and we were a bit underwhelmed. Having said that, it didn’t take away from the hotel’s charm and I’d still recommend it as a UK staycation.
It’s worth noting the hotel is next to a church so you’ll hear the church bells from some of the rooms throughout the night but I didn’t think the sound was particularly overpowering and earplugs are provided if you need them.
I’d recommend it for short stays e.g. 1-2 nights or longer stays if you’re planning to visit nearby seaside towns.
Things to do in Deal
The Rose has opened a new venue in a beachfront townhouse, just up the road. The Blue Pelican, is a restaurant with Japanese-inspired dining and natural wines. Above is The Pelican Rooms; a boutique yoga studio and treatment rooms.
Wander down the high street for boutique local shops such as Hoxton Store, Smoke on the Water, Pop Up Cafe, Dunlin and Diver and Will and Yates. Make sure you check shop opening times before visiting as lots are closed at the start of the week or on Sundays.
Rent a bike from the hotel to cycle to and along the coast
Enjoy an obligatory fish and chips by the sea
If you have spare time, you can get the train to other nearby seaside towns such as Margate and Whitstable.
